What will children learn?
Each 2.5 - hour session combines outdoor learning, nature activities, gardening and practical skills, with children actively involved in every part of the programme.
Week 1 – Seeds & Growing
Discover the world of seeds and learn how plants grow and reproduce. Children will explore seed saving and seed dispersal, collect and prepare seeds, make their own seed-saving packets and plant food to grow at home.
Week 2 – Foraging & Wild Food
Children will learn about foraging wild foods, and how to safely identify suitable edible plants. We'll explore responsible foraging and use seasonal ingredients to prepare a simple, delicious food activity.
Week 3 – Garden to Plate
Get hands-on in the garden by harvesting seasonal vegetables and herbs. Children will learn about the different parts of plants we eat, prepare fresh ingredients and have the opportunity to cook outdoors over a fire.
Week 4 – Preserving the Harvest
Discover how people traditionally stored food through the winter. We'll explore fermentation, pickling, drying and vegetable storage, including traditional sand-box storage for root vegetables.
Children will make a simple preserved food to take home and learn how preserving can help reduce food waste and make the most of a seasonal harvest.
Week 5 – Nature Craft & Wellbeing
Combine creativity and nature with nature crafts and therapeutic horticulture activities. Children will work with plants and natural materials to create their own projects while exploring how gardening and spending time outdoors can support wellbeing.
Week 6 – Nature Skills Challenge
Bring everything together with a fun nature skills challenge. Children will use their new knowledge of growing, seed saving, foraging, cooking and preserving before celebrating with a seasonal feast.

Spending time outdoors provides children with opportunities to learn using all of their senses. Gardening, cooking and nature-based activities also give children practical experiences that connect learning to everyday life. Throughout the programme, children will have opportunities to make decisions, solve problems, work together and develop practical skills — all while enjoying plenty of fresh air and time in nature. Many activities will also produce something children can take home, such as saved seeds, growing projects, recipes, preserved foods or nature crafts. Our homeschool programme is ideal for families looking for outdoor education, nature activities and practical learning for children in Wicklow and surrounding areas. Whether your child loves gardening, wildlife, cooking, crafts, getting muddy or simply exploring outdoors, there will be something for them to discover.
