What is Social and Therapeutic Horticulture?

Social and Therapeutic Horticulture is the practice of engaging with plants or plant activities to achieve specific goals within an established treatment, rehabilitation, or vocational plan, and can improve physical and mental wellbeing.

Therapeutic horticulture is an active process where the process itself is considered the aim of the activity rather than the end product.

Studies have proven that spending time in nature and with plants can improve feelings of stress, anxiety and depression, as well as foster a feeling of inclusion when engaged in with others.

It can allow clients the space to develop a sense of self, achieve goals, and connect and engage with nature and others when in a group setting. It can enhance the feeling of being valued and increase a sense of belonging.

No previous experience with plants is needed, just come with an open mind and heart and see what plant activities can do to improve your life.

What happens in a session?

A session usually lasts for 45 minutes and starts with a warm up activity like a gentle walk, or breathing work, or even just sitting and becoming aware to the sounds, smells and sights around you. Your facilitator will guide you and enable you to have space to engage with plants, plant material and nature through gentle coaching.

Next the plant activity begins, and can be as broad and varied as anything from planting seeds to flower arranging, to making wreaths - as long as a plant or plant matter is used it is regarded as therapeutic horticulture! It is truly fascinating to see how working with plants can shift mental and physical health.

Finally, a cool down activity is done, to close out the session and discuss any goals and takeaways.
